Winter 2023 Session

MCG Youth has been dedicated to inspiring creativity, learning, and personal growth through the arts for over 50 years.

 

By providing opportunities to hone their creative skills alongside teaching artists, we are focused on developing personal, artistic, future-ready, and civically minded high school students.

We are committed to creating a community that fosters a sense of belonging, interconnectedness, and hope.

ENROLLMENT

Apprenticeship Training Program(ATP) enrollment will be held exclusively via our website.

  • Enrollment will open at December 13th at 6:00 p.m.

  • Spaces fill quickly, so sign-up early!

  • Courses are offered at no cost to PPS students.

  • Admission is on first-come, first-served basis.

  • Waitlists will be maintained.

TRANSPORTATION

There will be a van or bus at most PPS high schools going to MCG Youth.

For all other students, transit tickets will be provided or MCG staff will arrange for pick-up.

Public transit tickets will be provided to get home.

Course Guide

Creative Spark is MCG Youth’s theme for the 2022-2023 ATP programming. This year we’ll be focusing on the creative process, from artistic conception to a polished final product. Courses that are marked with a 🔥 will be centered around this theme.

Other Worlds
Tuesdays, Jan. 3 - March 7

Get ready to venture into unknown territory and explore worlds of your own design! Utilizing digital painting tools and techniques, you will become a concept artist of your own planet. Learn how to visualize strange creatures, landscapes, and more in this digital-painting focused class.

Darkroom Mania
Tuesdays, Jan. 3 - March 7

Teaching Artist: Germaine Watkins

You made lots of negatives, now let’s make them into positives, using your existing negatives to print inside our wonderful darkroom! Experiment with cropping, dodging, burning and selective developing and toning.  Print 5x7, 8x10 or 11x14. Open to those with prior film photography experience.

Looking to make more in-depth work? MCG is partnering up with the Archie Bray in Montana to work with one of their Resident Artists. We will be building artwork that utilizes the techniques and responds to the artwork of our selected artists. Nearing the end of the session, we will have a video conference with the artist where they will give a talk about their work and answer questions from us about their processes and artistic practices.

Unleash your creative spark in this lightweight sculpture class.  We will work with various materials including cardboard, wire, paper-mâché, plaster, and fiber arts.  We will start the course with high and low reliefs, work through stand-alone three-dimensional sculptures, and finish with a site-specific installation piece.

Digital Film 🔥
Mini Architectural Ceramics

This class is for the inventors and crafters of the world, and we’ll learn how to use tools like laser cutting and 3D printing to build it better. From prop design and set pieces to installation artworks, we’ll test out the best techniques to bring your blueprints to life.

This is a combination class of film photography and digital printing! If you don’t have negatives, you’ll have the chance to shoot with 35mm and process during open studio time.  During class, take your negatives and scan them into digital format. From that you’ll be able to take your B&W images into photoshop to create unique photographic works of art! This is a great opportunity for you to develop life skills of scanning old images and bringing them to the digital age! Open to all students.

Like buildings, but think they’re too big? We are going to be building with clay in different ways as we utilize the slab roller to make small-scale sculptural buildings of our very own. They could be pulled out of your favorite skyline or movie, or you could create one out of your own head. We will make several differently scaled buildings, all with approachable hand-building techniques.

Drawing in Color

Refine your observational drawing skills.  We will draw many different types of still life objects and color them with colored pencils, pastels, and chalk.  We will also learn one-point and two-point perspective and learn to combine pen with watercolor washes to create indoor scenes.  Finally, we will produce a beautifully colored mixed-media portrait drawing.

Dip your toes into computer graphics with the powerful 3D program Blender. Practice techniques used by 3D texture artists to bring 3D models to life!

Intro to Clay

Jump into the world of ceramics as we open our clay studio for the new year!  We are going to be focusing on using the pottery wheel in this open-ended class.  If the wheel isn’t your deal, we will also have access to all our various hand-building options too!

Sewing (Intermediate)

This class is for students with some sewing experience.  We will be working on the sewing machines.  You will learn to use sewing patterns and learn how to alter and tailor garments.  In this class you will have the option of sewing apparel, accessories, or sculptures.
