2 min read

Week 2 is underway for MCG Youth's Thursday Afterschool Apprenticeship Training Program, and students are already immersing themselves in hands-on creative experiences across a variety of artistic disciplines. From sculpting and screen printing to laser fabrication and analog photography, participants are developing new skills, exploring creative problem-solving, and beginning projects that will grow throughout the trimester.

Face Value: Bringing Clay Portraits to Life

Students in Face Value are learning the art of sculptural portraiture through clay. Throughout the course, participants explore facial anatomy, proportions, and expressive sculpting techniques while creating ceramic busts inspired by themselves, someone they know, or even a favorite fictional character.

As the class moves into its second week, students are beginning to transform simple forms into recognizable faces, discovering how details and personality can emerge from a block of clay.

Print Lab: Screen Printing

In Print Lab: Screen Printing, creativity meets production. Students are designing original artwork by hand and digitally before transferring their designs onto paper and fabric using water-based inks. Along the way, they are learning about layering, color theory, and composition while gaining practical experience with a process used by artists and designers around the world.

Week 2 brings new opportunities for experimentation as students refine their designs and begin seeing their artwork come to life through print.

Laser Jewelry: Design Meets Technology

The Laser Jewelry course introduces students to the exciting world of digital fabrication. Using Adobe Illustrator and laser cutting technology, participants are designing custom earrings, rings, pendants, and other accessories.

As projects begin to take shape, students are learning how digital concepts can be transformed into tangible, wearable art. The class provides valuable experience in design thinking, vector graphics, and fabrication techniques that are increasingly used across creative industries.

Black & White Photo: Exploring Photography's Roots

Students enrolled in Black & White Photo are stepping back in time to discover the foundations of photography. From creating photograms to learning how to use SLR film cameras, participants are gaining hands-on experience with traditional photographic processes.

As the course enters Week 2, students are beginning to develop negatives and explore the magic of the darkroom, building an appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every image.

Learning Through Creativity

The Thursday Afterschool Apprenticeship Training Program is more than a collection of art classes. It is a space where young people can explore new interests, build technical skills, and work alongside experienced teaching artists who encourage creativity and personal growth.
