On April 21, students at Propel Montour took a hands-on journey into the world of natural building materials through an engaging earth plaster workshop. This experience introduced students to the fundamentals of earth-based construction by mixing clay and sand to create a functional plaster surface—connecting creativity with material science in a tangible way.

Inspired by the tradition of fresco painting, students worked with clay-based plaster rather than conventional lime plaster. While the plaster was still wet, they applied pigments directly to the surface, discovering how color, texture, and timing interact in this age-old technique.

Throughout the process, students explored the intersections of art, science, and sustainable design. By experimenting with earth-based materials, they gained insight into how natural resources can be used creatively and responsibly, while also developing an appreciation for texture, composition, and craftsmanship.
This immersive experience not only encouraged artistic expression, but also sparked curiosity about sustainable practices and the science behind the materials we use every day—demonstrating how learning truly comes alive when students can create with their hands.
