Visitors to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens now have a unique opportunity to experience the intersection of art and nature, thanks to an exciting collaboration with MCG Youth. From now through March 15, ceramics students from instructor Matt Zorn’s Botanic Panic class have their handcrafted works on display as part of Phipps’ Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show: Blooming with Love.
A Fusion of Craft and Conservation
As part of Zorn’s curriculum, students explored traditional Japanese kusamono—small, seasonally inspired botanical arrangements typically displayed alongside bonsai. Drawing inspiration from this tradition, the class created their own kusamono planters using both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Each piece reflects not only technical skill, but also the students’ personal interpretations of form, balance, and natural harmony.
The result? A stunning collection of ceramic vessels that serve as living art when paired with carefully selected plants provided by the conservatory’s horticulture team.
Art Comes Alive Among the Orchids
In collaboration with Phipps Conservatory, these student-made planters have been integrated directly into the Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show, one of Phipps’ most beloved seasonal exhibitions. Surrounded by vibrant blooms, intricate bonsai, and lush greenery, the ceramics take on a new life—inviting guests to appreciate the synergy between craftsmanship and horticulture.
This partnership celebrates creativity, collaboration, and community. It offers MCG Youth students a rare professional opportunity to see their artwork displayed in one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic cultural institutions, while giving visitors a fresh, contemporary perspective on botanical art.
