MCG Youth Students Return from Transformative Archie Bray Experience

This summer, four outstanding MCG Youth students traveled to the renowned Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, for an intensive five-day ceramics immersion led by teaching artists Matt Zorn and Zo Zielinski.

Now in its sixth year, the Archie Bray trip provides students with a unique opportunity to develop their skills at one of the nation’s most respected centers for ceramic arts. During their residency, students spent time creating independent work with specialized clay bodies, exploring new techniques, and learning directly from internationally recognized resident artists.

In addition to their studio experience, students explored the natural beauty of Montana with a hike up Mount Helena, adding an element of adventure and discovery to the week.

Reflecting on the experience, Zorn emphasized the significance of the opportunity for young artists. “This is basically the place to go in the U.S. for ceramics,” he said. “We’re really fortunate.”

The trip offered students not only advanced artistic instruction but also the chance to grow as creative thinkers, build confidence, and experience a professional arts community firsthand. Their time at Archie Bray served as an inspiring milestone in their artistic journeys and reinforced MCG Youth’s commitment to providing transformative opportunities beyond the classroom.
